PHNOM PENH, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) — Connecting the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh to the deep-water international port province of Preah Sihanouk, the first Chinese-invested Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville Highway (PPSHV) has given a significant boost to the country’s economic growth and tourism development.
Invested by the China Road and Bridge Corporation, the $2 billion expressway opened to traffic on Oct. 1 for a month-long free trial operation after more than three years of construction.
Sareth Sreypich, a 29-year-old supervisor at highway toll stations, said the 187km highway has played a significant role in improving the efficiency of the nation’s travel and logistics system. ‘South East Asia.
“Before, we traveled on National Highway 4, it took up to five hours, but now, traveling on the expressway, it only takes two hours,” she told Xinhua on Monday. “Motorists say that since there is the freeway, their journeys are easy, it saves them money and reduces their journey time.”
Sreypich said it only costs US$12 toll for a family car in a single trip between the two destinations.
She said earlier that container trucks or lorries spend one or two days traveling from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville and vice versa, but with the highway they can travel two or three times a day.
Teng Sok Hem, a 24-year-old supervisor at the PPSHV highway monitoring center, said the highway is the first of its kind in the kingdom.
“The highway has reduced travel time and saved money, and it has boosted Cambodia’s economy, tourism and transportation,” she told Xinhua. “I’m proud to work here because I feel like I’ve helped boost Cambodia’s economy.”
Cambodian Minister of Public Works and Transport Sun Chanthol said the expressway is the largest single project under the Belt and Road Initiative cooperation between Cambodia and China.
“This highway is a strategic road,” he said, noting that it will become the road with great economic and tourism potential for Cambodia.
The minister said the highway will help businesses to become more competitive, as they will spend less time and money on transportation.
The highway has two lanes of traffic in each direction plus an emergency lane on each side and is paved with asphalt concrete. It can only be used by 500cc or more motorcycles and cars with a minimum speed of 70 km.
Chea Chandara, president of the Association of Logistics and Supply Chain Companies in Cambodia, said the highway has breathed new life into the country’s economic development since linking the capital and the largest seaport. of the Kingdom.
“The highway will undoubtedly bring great benefits to our economic development as it will facilitate the transportation of goods between Phnom Penh and the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, a major gateway for Cambodia’s trade with other countries” , he told Xinhua. ■
