(MENAFN) Leader Xi Jinping said on Wednesday that China is ready to handle momentary financial impacts instead of hurting its citizens.

During a visit to Wuhan, the central Chinese city where the first COVID-19 infections occurred in December three years ago, Xi assured Beijing’s need to endure with its strict “zero -COVID”.

According to the state-run Global Times daily, Xi said that “given China’s large population, if it pursues herd immunity and adopts a ‘lying’ approach, the consequences would be unimaginable. Dynamic “zero-COVID” is the most economical and efficient choice for the country. »

Beijing has at times relied on tough restrictions and lockdowns to stem the spread of the virus, halting trade actions and reducing the country’s chances of hitting its annual expansion targets.

Xi, however, stressed that the administration would “temporarily affect economic development rather than harm the lives and health of its people.”

He also pointed out that “China has the ability and strength to implement a dynamic zero-COVID policy until it achieves final victory.”
